Meditation is the practice of calming the mind and body in order to bring presence to all experience. To open fully to love and joy, and grief and pain. “The ten thousand joys, and the ten thousand sorrows.” It is often done by focusing on the breath, and simply observing thoughts and feelings as they arise, without judgement or attachment.
What is meditation, and how does it work?
Yes, it is for all. It doesn't require any special skills or prior experience. Whether you're a beginner or have been meditating for years, there is always something to discover and explore.
Can anyone learn to meditate, regardless of their experience or age?
Mindfulness can help with anxiety, with sleep, it can increase focus, and improve overall physical and mental well being. Among a myriad of other things.
What are the benefits of meditation?
Yes, it can play a positive role in supporting mental health. Helping to promote relaxation, reducing stress, and increasing self-awareness. By practising mindfulness, you can learn to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgement, which will lead to a greater sense of balance. However, while meditation offers relief from symptoms, I am not a mental health expert and it's important to consult your GP or a mental health professional for further guidance. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and your well-being is the priority.
Can meditation help with mental health?
Starting is simple. Finding a quiet, comfortable space (no problem if you can’t, the bus stop will do) sitting, lying down or standing up. Closing the eyes or lowering the gaze, and focusing on the breath. In through the nose and out through the nose. Long, deep breaths, no effort. When the mind wanders, which it inevitably will, acknowledge and gently bring the focus back to the breath. Starting with short sessions, 3 minutes or so, and gradually increasing, you’ll know when. There are lots of short meditations on my Instagram which you can try.
How do I get started with meditation if I'm a complete beginner?
The duration can vary, even just being present for 3 breaths can yield noticeable benefits. The secret is consistency. A daily practice. Be your own guide.
How long should I meditate each day to experience its benefits?
